Papua New Guinea Mission

Missionary "Jungle Doctor" Jorma Finnilä and his wife Eila have been doing missionary work in Papua New Guinea since 1975. Through their ministry, Finnish Pentecostal Churches of Papua New Guinea Inc. was born, with over 100 congregations. They have also set up a mission station and Bible school in the town of Mendi, from where they are active in local evangelism and coordinate national work.

FOUR PROJECTS HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED

BIG TENT

The collection of the new big tent (9027) was more successful than expected. The new tent was inaugurated in January 2019 in Mendi, Papua New Guinea and more than 25 000 people attended the conference over five days. The tent has been in heavy use since. This year, the 2020 conference was held in January on a similar scale some 70 km away in Nipa. 

COLLECTION OF ACCESSORIES AND REMANUFACTURING

The collection of accessories (9030) also went well. The collection was also prompted by the 7.5 Richter earthquake that devastated the city of Mendi and the mission station in February 2018. We sent the accessories with the big top to Papua New Guinea in autumn 2018. The tools, etc. supplies have been a great help in repairing the mission and church buildings. 

MISSION STATION REPAIR PROJECT (NEHEMIAH PROJECT)

The fundraising for the Nehemiah project has also been completed. The official estimate of the damage was provisionally around €100.000, for which we raised funds under reference 9043. The project funds were used to repair damaged church and mission buildings, replace unusable water tanks, repair sewers and water pipes and reinforce structures in case of further earthquakes. Contrary to initial estimates, needs have turned out to be lower, thanks in large part to the voluntary work of locals and Finns. Now that the buildings have been restored and no further need for repair has arisen, there is no longer any need to continue the collection.

TRUCK PROJECT

Transporting the big tent required a heavier truck than we had previously estimated. The truck, which had served the mission for 33 years, was at the end of its use. It was unable to move a large yard and its equipment at once, let alone cover long distances and poor roads. A fundraising project for the replacement of a big-tent truck was launched with reference 9069 (target €45 000) in June 2019.

The project went ahead as planned, but when the time came to buy a car in early 2020, the country's car supply had dwindled to almost nothing. In reality, there were only 2 suitable trucks available! Due to limited supply, the need for collection was significantly higher than estimated in euro; after all costs.  53000€. This was a big challenge for us, but with the grace of the Lord and your donations that exceeded the initial estimate, we were able to purchase the truck! The truck project was completed and the new truck was delivered to Mendi church in March 2020.
